Please help. Here are the scenarios:

Canon 5D Mark II image looks gorgeous using Canon Digital Professional
Software.
Same image in LR 2.3 has heavy noise present (a lot of grain).
LR 2.3 Noise Reduction slider in "Develop module" is at default value
(zero), where it should be right? Why do I say this should be correct? I'll
explain.

Different Canon 2'D image in LR 1.4.1 looks great and Noise Reduction
slider in "Develop module" is at default value (zero), where it should be,
because I never had to adjust this for any images.

My Question: Why are my images in LR 2.3 showing grain (heavy noise)
with the Noise Reduction level in the Develop module set at default?
And when I am in LR 1.4.1 my 2'D images look great with Noise Reduction set to
default?
Yes, I could crank my Noise Reduction to in LR 2.3 to 1'' to clear up the
grain, but this is not the normal default in LR 1.4.1 or even Canon
Digital Professional Software to have the image look as shot.

Is there a setting in that I am not aware of?

I can't speak for the differences in LR1 vs LR2 but I can explain the differences in LR vs Canon DPP. DPP applies more NR by default.

Also, just a couple of questions, when you are comparing the photos from your 2'd to your 5d2 are you sure they have the same amount of noise to start with? Lastly, are you comparing all RAW files or are some of them jpeg's?

I'm not sure I understand your problem statement. Is it the actual noise reduction result you're not happy with, or is it the high numerical setting required to achieve a satisfactory result?

Evan, I am not comparing the 2'D images to the 5D, Just saying when I use the 2'D in LR 1.4.1, the images look great with "noise reduction" at default.

Looking at the 5D images in LR 2.3, the images have heavy grain on them. Sliding the noise reduction to 1'' gets the grain out, but why would that be necessary?
All images are Raw only.

When I was using the 2'D with LR 1.4.1 the image looked the same in DPP.
When I use the 5D the image looks good in DPP, but bad in LR 2.3 (unless I crank up the noise reduction).

Brad, the question I have is: Is there something I am doing wrong to have the Raw pictures look like they have heavy grain on them in LR 2.3? In Canon Digital Professional they look great. So why are they noisy in LR 2.3? Thanks so much for helping me. I need it right now.

My experience is that DPP applies much more noise reduction to high ISO images.

In DPP, look how much noise reduction is being applied and set the lightroom sliders to be a similar percentage and you results should be closer.

What ISO are you using?

Evan, I was using ISO 64'', AP, with bounce flash in a dark room. I attended a Denis Reggie seminar recently and this was what he did for photo journalism. (Well, it worked for him) (Go figure) Maybe I should have kept the ISO a little lower, but Denis said he uses ISO 64'' all the time inside a facility, so that's what I did. Did I say his images came out better? ;)

At ISO 64'' your images are going to have some noise. Also DPP will apply a LOT of NR in these photos. Canon uses lots of noise reduction by default. By comparison, LR uses very little by default.

In most cases, as long as you are not cropping the images heavily or making huge prints they should be usable with some additional NR applied in LR.

I think the difference between what you were seeing with your 2'd vs 5dii is that you were probably shooting in lower ISO with your 2'd.

Thats just speculation though.

If you want to know for sure just remove the noise reduction in DPP. You should see a similar noise level as in Lightroom.

Just to clarify this point - you can't! DPP applies a level of noise reduction even when the slider's at ', in order to make its files look good regardless. LR at least gives you the choice.

I've been thinking along the same lines, Nik.

Noise reduction only shows in Develop at 1:1. In Library, noise reduction only shows if 1:1 previews have been rendered.

So if you're looking in Develop at less than 1:1, you should expect to see noise at ISO 64''. If you're looking in Library at less than 1:1, try rendering a 1:1 preview first.

This caught me out at first.... In Aperture it re-renders the preview straight away (if you want) so you see the changes immediately. I was making some chromatic error correction at 1''% in LR and when I zoomed back out the chromatic abberations were still visible. When I zoomed back in to 1''% they went again. That's how I discovered how LR works in this respect :)
