Hi, Ive searched around, hope its not too obvious or discussed before, my first post here.

When in Library> grid view or Web where you have all the thumbnails in a sort of grid, can you sort by a better way then colour or rating? Ive tried dragging n dropping but it doesnt work.

I can group by giving star rating, but then within that group I would love a way of doing order without having to go back and rename all my files if possible.

Any ideas?
Thanks
Wendy, New Zealand

Hi Wendy, welcome to the forum!

Dragging and dropping works in Grid mode, but there is a proviso - it doesn't work in a composite view. So if you're viewing a folder with no subfolders, or if you're viewing a collection with no subcollections, drag and drop should work fine. It doesn't work if you're viewing a folder and the contents of its subfolders.

Oh, and pick the pictures up by the middle of the image itself, not the outer area.

Loads of people do that Wendy, that's what we're here for!

Hi Nic, welcome to the forum!

Yes, it is in Library module. Have you checked that you're in a lowest level folder? Can you see 'User Order' in the sort order dropdown?

Hi Victoria, thats an imprssive response time!

The only 'user order' i can find is: View>sort>user order - which wasn't, but is now ticked. Additionally i wasn't in the lowest level folder, but am now. And it still doesn't work... could it be a filter I inadvertantly have turned on?

thanks.

Well we try not to keep you waiting too long! ;)

Ok, that user order is the one you want. And you definitely want the lowest level folder, so that's good too. A filter shouldn't cause problems on this one, so let's check how you're dragging/dropping. You need to pick the picture up by the centre of the image itself, not the area around it. And when you drag to a new location, you should see a black line show up, showing where it's going to try and drop it. Do you see that?

Hi Victoria,
i think i have a bit more information that might help you... i can't understand it:

I can go to other folders in LR and i get the black line and can drag and drop.

But with this particular folder - the one that ironically i am working on... i drag and drop from the centre of the picture, get the small thumbnail as i drag, but no black line appears, so i can't drop.

ALSO: the view>sort>user order option on the top menu bar is now ticked; but on the bar above the filmstrip, to the right of the painter tool, it has the 'sort' option, A-Z or Z-A. Then a drop down menu with various options.

On the folder i have where i can drag and drop, there is a 'user order' option here as well, which is ticked. but on this folder where i can't drag and drop, there IS NO 'user order' option. Where's it gone?

I have checked in windows explorer and there are no other folders inside this folder...

Re:Drag & Drop

Probably a daft suggestion but do you have the folder 'highlighted' that you are trying to drag and drop into?

This is the key. We just need to figure out what it is about that folder that won't allow you to drag/drop. A screenshot showing the folder in the folders panel would be a great help.

Ok, that's perfect. See that little solid arrow next to the folder in the folders panel? That means there's a subfolder. Click on it to see what the lower level folder is - if it doesn't exist in Explorer, it's probably because LR still *thinks* there's one there. If there's nothing in it, you can delete it (right click on it, delete folder)

Great! Well done Nic!

I was having trouble dragging and dropping to the change the order of the thumbnails until I did it from the center of the picture. Then it worked. It doesn't work from the borders around the picture. Hope this helps.
