Cannot for the life of me find out what the difference between the full and the greyed out arrow means next to a keyword in the Keyword List Panel, any suggestions from the hive mind would be appreciated.

I assume you mean the arrows in front of the keywords? If it's solid, then it contains one or more sub-keywords. If it is greyed out, then it does not.

Thanks Johan , now i am going to stand in the corner and feel really stupid for a bit.

Johan is referring to the spinner triangles at the left. But as you used the word "arrow" did you mean the right facing arrow at the right end of the keyword line? If so, it is invisible if the mouse is not hovered over the keyword and appears when the mouse is over that keyword. Clicking that arrow filters your "all photos" collection for images that have that keyword (along with images that have keywords indented inside of that keyword)
