Good workflow for replacing images?

Hello everyone!

I just bought a new scanner and I would like to re-scan some images that I already scanned in the past, this time with a much better image quality.
What would be the best workflow to replace the already existing scans in my library with the new scans?

I didn't find a specific function for this yet, so I guess it has to work manually somehow.

I would need to keep the metadata, Capture time, Exif etc.
But I would need to discard all of the editing (but they actually do not have much editing anyway, just cropping mostly).

Is there any efficient way to do this?

Import the new scans into Lightroom, and then copy the metadata. You do this by selecting the old scan, ctrl-clicking on the new scan and then select Sync Metadata. A dialog box opens up which lets you select the metadata to copy (synchronize) from the first selected photo to the 2nd selected photo. Most metadata can by synchronized this way, but as far as I know, of all the different dates stored by Lightroom, only the "date created" may be synchronized in this fashion.

There is no automatic way to do this, you will have to do this image by image.

Are you literally replacing existing scans? If so, and if they're named the same, just replace the files on the hard drive and LR will keep the data in the catalog, as if it's overlaid over the top. It's like opening a file in Photoshop outside of LR and retouching and resaving it - next time you look at the file in LR, it updates to show your new retouching but still applies the same LR settings.

Doesn't this run afoul of the original request: “I would need to discard all of the editing”?

I missed that, yes, you're right Paige. Although it'd be quite easy to select them all and hit Reset for the Develop settings.

Of course, reset them all! I should have thought of that.

thank you for your help. I will do it like you suggested. Pity that there is no replace function built in, I think it would be quite useful in cases like that.
I guess I will make a feature request.
