I'm using a new installation of LR 2 on a Mac Pro (2.66 dual core) with 5GB ram. At first I tried using a single catalog, but with over 1''k images things got awful pokey. Now I'm trying to just use a working images catalog for now (about 1'k images). I'm getting the spinning beach ball and other hangups--freezes and crashes. Any suggestions?

My startup drive has 24'gb free. My catalog resides on an internal drive with 147gb free.

Jim,

I'm on Windows, but I believe there is at least one known internal bug which has the potential beach-balling on Macs. Something like a memory or resource-leak under some specific conditions, which is to be addressed in a dot release.

I'm not sure there is a work-around for this at this point. If you've kept up with LR forums around the net, you'll know that LR2 performance is all over the map for various folks/systems/workflows. Reactions vary from ecstatic to irate.

How's that for a weasel worded non-answer? :)

I have the same problem on my Mac Pro 2.8 Dual Quad with 6gb ram. I asked the question over at NAPP and here's what they suggested. I haven't tried it yet but thought I would give you the information. It's worth a try.

- go to Lightroom > Catalog Settings > General and click the Relaunch
and Optimize button

- when Lightroom relaunches, go to Lightroom > Preferences > File
Handling, increase the camera raw cache to 25-4'GB (depending upon how
much room you have)
- click OK
- reboot and see if that makes a difference

rji: thanks for the tip, I think that worked for me. I was just having trouble once again with LR crashing repeatedly while trying to make a small Web gallery. I came back here to check the thread, and then tried increasing the raw cache. After doing that I was able to complete and upload the gallery.

Ah that did help, but problem is happening again. Increased raw cache to 4'GB, optimized catalog, but it keeps crashing as I build a web gallery. Anyone else having this trouble? Any other suggestions?

On one specific photo? My first thought is it's hitting a corrupted file.

No, I don't think it's a corrupted file. I've had this problem with several different shoots, and I've never found a bad file.

Which gallery? One of the build in ones, or a third party? Tried with a different gallery? Tried with a smaller export?

I almost always use LR Flash Gallery. Small exports tend to work fine.

I've been rendering one of my internal drives for the last hour or so, and it seems to be going fine. I have a hunch I may be having trouble with my FW & USB interfaces. I recently had a scanner hang that was connected via FW4'', and seem to be having trouble with external drives and LR. Again, I'm using USB as well as FW8'' external drives.

I think you may be right.... it's not something daft like the external drives going to sleep, or something like that?

I just checked, and "put hard drives to sleep" is not checked in my OS X system prefs. At the Apple forums I'm looking into possible FW/USB issue.

Update:

Working with Apple support--so far no sign of FW/USB issues. I am having frequent freezes (spinning beach ball) with LR 2.7 and 2.6 (tried downgrading as some users have solved issues that way).
