Just figured out a huge breakthrough, in my opinion.
I have been noticing problems with my adjustment and heal/clone brush. I use a mouse wheel control program to resize any brushes in lightroom and photoshop. When I would scroll my mouse wheel to resize my brush, it would resize really slow. I would also notice the slow resize with the left and right bracket. Certain times it would be super fast and responsive, most of the time slow and sluggish. Very annoying. I also noticed when I would select the clone/heal brush, it would stutter around the screen and lag. Resizing this brush was slow too.

All of a sudden it works fine....hmmm what did I do different. Oh yeah, I just rendered my standard size previews to review my entire event fully rendered. Now my brushes work great!!! Test it out by closing lightroom and relaunching. Slow sluggish brushes again. Change to library module, go to library menu, render standard sized previews. No previews rendered because I just did it, but brushes work fine again. Seems to be an issue with the previews that is causing this lag.

Can anyone else attest to this or back up my theory? Seems to work for me. Hope this helps and if this has already been discussed, sorry. Just really excited I figured it out finally.

Thanks,
Toby

Interesting find.

However, when I found the preview tab it opened out to

Render Standard Sized
Render 1:1

Discard 1:1 previews.

I do not have any of these ticked. Am I missing something? As I have LR running reasonably well, for what I do, speed of workflow, whilst occasionally a tad irritating when brushes grind to a halt, is not ultimately crucial. Based on the adage of ain't fixed so don't break it, I will be interested to see how this thread develops.

Hi Toby, welcome to the forum!

Technically it *shouldn't* be the previews, because Lightroom only briefly uses the pre-built previews in Develop module and then reads the raw data. That said, anything's possible. By all means report it to the engineers to investigate further. Official Feature Request/Bug Report Form

And have you updated to the 2.3 RC available from labs.adobe.com? Because that should make a difference.

calaf,
You need to physically select to render standard sized previews. It is not a ticked option.
From my experience Lightroom does not fully render every file as you are working on it. I know if you take a file into photoshop and do some edits and then save it back to lightroom it does not fully render the file. You can notice this when you select to render and watch the progress bar render a few of the images in your current project.

Victoria,
I understand it shouldn't do this but on my machine and my version of lightroom, 2.', 2.1, 2.2, and now 2.3RC, I experience this problem. Not sure if anyone elses clone/heal brush jumps around the screen and is not smooth. I will try to upload a screen capture of the problem and show what I am talking about.

Can anyone else verify this phenomenon? Well at least it works for me. I was just trying to share a tip. If it helps one person out, I have done a good deed.

Absolutely Toby! All tips are worth having. Do put in a bug report to Adobe too, as fixing the source of the problem will be even better.

I have uploaded a screen capture of my problem. You can notice the jumpy cursor a little with the clone/heal brush. The main area to notice is the brush resizing. I do this with a mouse wheel control program, but it responds the same with left/right bracket. Very slow and jumpy before the fix. Also the same with local adjustment brush.

Once I apply the "fix" you can see how smooth the clone/heal brush not only moves but resizes. Weird fix but it works.

Hope this helps someone
