I depend a lot on the use of keywords in Adobe Lightroom. For my badminton catalog, I've a lot of player's names with foreign characters. For instance: Raphaël van Wel, Frédéric Gaspard, Chloë De Pauw, ... When I exported my pictures via File/Export/Upload to Gallery (via plugin) everything is ok but the keywords. Where there was a foreign character (ë, é, ...) now the character is gone. I checked the database and there in table g2_item I see for instance that Chloë has become Chlo‘ë, Raphaël has become Raphaë‘l, ... I then changed the keywords in Gallery2 itself and the names are correct now (see http://d-eye.be/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=8') but I just don't want to do this every time. Apparently there's no link between the keywords and the database because after I changed the keywords in gallery2, the database still remains the same. I also tried in admin converting the database to utf-8 but to no avail. Is this a gallery2, lightroom or database problem?
When I export a picture with the keyword "Raphaël van Wel" to jpg, Adobe Bridge is reading and displaying the correct keyword. When I export my keywords to a .txt file, all names with a foreign character are messed up.

I do have the very same problem and I reported to Adobe last year on their bug report form. Thereafter, Lightroom 1.3.1 still have the same problem. So I temporarily solved the problem by not using foreing characters until it is fixed. :(

This is not too much of a problem as keywords are for myself (for now). But I admit this is annoying for someone searching on the net. I've got the habit not to use foreing characters when searching on the net as Google for example treat "e", "ë" and "é" the same.

Sorry, just hope your visitors make the same guess...

Character encoding

While addressing a different aspect of international language support I happened upon this discussion. While I imagine you have both either resolved the issue or given up on it, I thought I might tell you what I think is happening.

Problems like this are typically caused by the Internet character encoding getting mixed up. If you open the "View" tab of your browser you will see an "Encoding" tab. Under that you can see what encoding your browser is using for the page being displayed - chances are that it is "Western European (ISO)".

What probably happened to Chloë's name is that at the interface between Lightroom and the other software it got tagged as being encoded differently without actually getting translated. Typically UTF-8 is involved - once that encoding has been adopted by us all this problem will presumably go away.

In the meantime it seems to be a common problem - I have a SmugMug page which handles captions fine on its own but when it posts pictures to Google for display (on GoogleMaps) the captions get thoroughly mangled.
