force LR to rewrite metadata?

Hi all,

So I have two issues. One has an easy solution, the other doesn't.

1) My pictures are in a directory format that lightroom doesn't use.

Easy fix, re-import to YYYY\MM\DD\file-name...

Question here, any recommendations for a file name convention? Mine is either the camera sequence, or the date/time then the camera sequence. I'm thinking it might be nice to change it.

2) My metadata is screwy. One program wrote noncompliant iptc/xmp so now nothing that uses .net jpeg libraries can edit the metadata. Can I force lightroom to read and rewrite all the data in the files? Is that advisable? Could I use a tool like exif-tool to do that via batch? Could really use a hand on this one.

1) Nothing wrong with using yymmdd-camera sequence, lots of people do.
I generally just use Custom Name_YYMMDD_3 dig Seq (or 4 for larger shoots)

2)Hmm. You could select all in All Photographs, then Read Metadata from File. Then run Save Metadata to file when the read is done. It will be a lengthy procedure though and may not cure the issue.

Another vote for Custom Name_YYMMDD_3 dig Seq. I also keep RAW/DNG in a separate folder structure to the exported Jpeg/Tif files. This is because I use the 'bucket' system advocated by Peter Krogh (worth googling him and reading his excellent book).
