I work on a 2023 14 inch Mac Book Pro and the OS is Sonoma 14.6.1 .

My photos are all on an external hard drive.( backed up and carbon copied on 2 other EHD ). When I started with Lightroom I would import my photos from the SD card to folders I created directly on my EHD. I did not go through Lightroom to create those folders. I guess I missed the + sign next to the folder title on the left panel . The folders that I have on my EHD do not match what is on the left panel in LRC.

Is the way to fix this to go to folder in the left panel, click the + sign, create a folder, name it then find the corresponding one on my EHD then import it? It does say add at the top of the import page - would that allow me to find my photos more easily? I do get the dreaded question mark a lot.

When I do this as a trial ( without importing ) the list of folders on the left panel corresponds to the folders I created separately on the EHD but they are all greyed out. I am assuming I would have to add all the folders one by one?

Please be kind

Nathalie

. The folder panel only contains folders that have imported images.
You need to used the Import dialog to import images. When you do that, you and point the Import source to the EHD and select your images. Then use the ADD option to add them to the catalog where they are.

You can speed up your import process by starting with the camera card. Setting it as the source in the import dialog and then selecting a folder on the EHD as destination.
