Folder images don't show in grid

I was stumped this weekend by a student's issue: he had a folder in LR 2.4 with 43 images. Only 26 showed in the grid -- it seems like it was the ones he had flagged. However, there was no filter being applied (we hit "None" in the filter bar several times.)

He had made a collection with these same 43 images. They all did show up when he clicked on the collection.

Any ideas?

Btw, this was a root folder -- it contained no subfolders.

Restart, reboot? Then usual troubleshooting, prefs, optimize, integrity, etc.
