Flags lost when creating collection

When I import photos, I usually go through and add some basic keywords, flag the duds with X & the best with P, and delete the rejected pics. Then when I create a new collection, the pick flags are no longer there? Am I missing a setting somewhere? Does LR just never carry flags between collections? I haven't been using collections long, and I may need to adjust my workflow. I keep pics in folders by date. That system, along with keywords, is usually good enough. But I thought I'd try making some collections since they seem like a powerful organizing tool. I find this feature/bug frustrating though. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Tom, flags are local, that is they are for each collection or view.
Stars and colour ratings are global so you need to use them for visibility across collections, etc.

In addition to Geoff's explanation and handy reference link, I would note that this functionality is by design. By way of example, imagine two collections "Bride's Mom Prints", and "Groom's Mom Prints", it's quite likely the picks/rejects in each of those collections will be different.

Again, as Geoff recommends, you can work around this with other metadata tools: star ratings, color labels, keywords.

Thanks, all. That makes sense. I will just change my workflow a bit, and use collections only for session picks by selecting only flagged shots and making them a collection.
