Hey guys. So good to be here amongst what looks to be a very helpful community.

Heres my question. I shoot weddings. I like to divide the days images into categories. If I do the categorizing in LR, is there a way to do the final export in a manner that would make a folder for each category. There is no reason for me to go to the trouble of categorizing in LR if all the final JPEGS are exported out to one folder....needing to be sorted once again. I would love to be able to do everything in LR.

I am intrigued with the idea of using keywords such as: ceremony, reception, dancing, portraits etc. The problem I run into is knowing which thumbnails I've key worded and which ones I haven't. If I could apply the keyword to a thumbnail and then have that thumbnail disappear, that would be a big help...kind of like filtering with color labels.

I hope I am making sense here. What are your thoughts?

Others will do otherwise but there is the method I would use:
Create a Collection for your Wedding and then add subcollections to it. These will correspond to your categories. Note that you can have an image appearing in different collections. Once done, do an export from each Collection (Category).

To make images disappear: Create a "Dummy" keyword. In the "Search" pane, Tick "Text: Keywords" and for "Rule" pick "Do not contain". Beside the Loupe, type the "Dummy" keyword. Once you have finished keywording an image, just add the "Dummy" keyword to it and it will disappear from view. when there are no more images to be done, just remove the "Dummy" keyword from the list. Accept the warning that say it will be removed from all images containing it.

Et voilà!

Wow, thanks! I just had a crash course in the key wording and search features of Lightroom....neither of which have recieved much use from me...until now. Thanks for your help! Is there yet another way to skin this cat?

Sure, here's another way that gets most of the way there... Rather than using collections, use metadata. I'd suggest using keywords (as you mentioned) or perhaps IPTC JobID. The advantage of using something like JobID is that you could put in a filename template... So while all the files would go to one directory, at least the filenames would include the category.

To see only those things that don't have that field set, you'd use the Find panel to search for only those images that don't include whatever you've set. (In 2.x, you'd set up a filter.)

Addendum: If you're on a Mac, you could set up a Folder Action to automatically move the files into subfolders according to their filename.
