Hi, first post here hope I don't break any rules by this post. I'm having a problem filtering with color labels. When viewing a smart collection which has only one rule: "Label color - is - green", photos which have been given blue or purple labels also are displayed as a part of the smart collection, i.e. it is including them when it should *only* include green-labeled photos. I only have one color label set. I have taken two screenshots which should very succinctly illustrate the problem, if my words have been insufficient.

This shows the smart collection settings:

And here is what I see when I view the smart collection:

I'm not sure why this is happening. I've wasted hours trying to figure it out, to no avail. If anyone can help I would appreciate it.

Thanks

Sorry here are the images, didn't realize those links would not work!

While not offering a solution yet, I noticed something strange here:
As no image can have two colors at once and there are 4 Blue, 68 Green
and 7 Yellow totaling 79, I wonder why the "All photographs" at top is showing 75!

Probably 'cause som Virtual Copies have another color than the original photos?

That would be the result of the same issue, which is that the "green" smart collection is showing both green and blue. there are four blue: so those four are being counted twice in your 79 total (when adding the numbers in the color collections). to be clear, there are none with "custom" label either (it's not in the screenshot but I have checked and there are none).

So that's just the same problem. 79-75 = 4, because those were counted an extra time.

actually virtual copies also count in the total, so that couldn't be it. it's because the blues are counted twice (they are in both green & blue collections)

First time see a colorblind computer!
Are the other similar Smart Collections set exactly the same?:
Match: All
Color: is: Yellow (as example)

Also check if the master "Color" Collection container is empty...

One other thing, is that Lightroom 2.' or Lightroom 2.1?
And what if you close Lightroom and reopen?...

yes, exactly the same.

I'm not sure I understand. Collection containers cannot hold photos, but only collections, if I am not mistaken, and furthermore these are all Smart Collections, so photos can't be added or removed by any other means than the rules in the Smart Collections' settings.

Tried multiple times, doesn't do a thing, also tried selecting all and exporting to a new catalog, also does no good. Even tried "optimizing" the catalog, in hopes that would change something, but nothing.

Thank you for your suggestions so far! I hope this can be figured out, but it's starting to look like a genuine bug :(

Thanks for your signature! Optimizing was to be my next suggestion but you did it...
Try something to see what happens: In the Green Collection, select the Blue ones and
make them Red. They should disappear from the Green Collection and the Red collection
count 4. Make those 4 Red images back to Blue. What do we have now?

After making them red, they disappear from the Green collection, and enter the Red collection, as they should do. Upon making them Blue, this is reversed, and they can now be found in both the Green and Blue categories, just as before.

This also happens when I select green photos and make them red and then make them blue (or any combination of changes). The Green collection is consistently including the Blue photos for no apparent reason. I might also mention that it is doing the same thing with Purple photos, but I assume that the whatever the cause of this happening with Blue photos will be the same reason, so I only mentioned the Blue. But Green is including Blue and Purple (as well as Green). All the other categories work fine.

At this point I should also explain that this happens not only with Smart Collections, but also when clicking "All Photographs" under "Catalog", selecting the Attribute filter at the top, and clicking the green box in order to show only green photos. When doing this, both green and blue (and purple if there are any) are displayed. Again, the other filters work fine - Blue only shows Blue, Yellow only Yellow, etc.

So Lightroom is failing to filter appropriately and for the life of me I can't say why.

This is certainly strange and I'm inclined to think it's a bug of some sort, but let's keep exploring.

You said that you're not using a custom color label set, but just to be sure... If you go to Color Label Set/Edit... in the Metadata menu, you are using the Default set, and the names of the green and blue labels are different from each other, right?

Me neither then! :(
Time for a bug report to Adobe about this colorblindness...
You can find a direct link to their Bug Report form at the center
of the blue line, top of the forums.

Unless another Guru have a better idea, I am clueless. :?

At first, I had only one set, and the labels were:

Red: common
Yellow: web
Green: print
Blue: fine print
Purple: poster print

I set this up, deleted the original color label set (so as not to cause some strange conflicts), and then began to label my photos with various color labels, in order to distinguish between their printing/display quality.

After having encountered this problem, I have now changed the labels to the names of their respective colors:

Red: red
Yellow: yellow
Green: green
Blue: blue
Purple: purple

After doing this, all of the images had "custom" labels of course, since the label set being used did not match the former text in the "Label" metadata field. So I selected all of the photos and labeled them assigned them the "green" label, which changed the text in the "label" metadata field and made all of their thumbnails green.

After doing this, I went back to the Color: Green collection, and changed some of them to various colors. No matter which color label I assigned, they would remain in the "Green" Smart Collection.

Gave it some thought and restarted Lightroom, and now things APPEAR TO BE WORKING AS INTENDED (although a restart should not have been necessary).

I can only assume that this is because the Green label used "print", which was not equal to, but found within, the Blue and Purple collections. This seems to be a bug, since "print" is certainly not the same as "fine print" or "poster print".

After changing the color label set for testing purposes to:

red: "family"
yellow: "family trips"
green: "happy family"
blue: "kittens"
purple: "cereal is very good"

I have found that:

filtering to see just Red ("family") photos will show you: red, yellow, green (all those with "family" somewhere in the label's text)

filtering to just see Yellow ("family trips") photos wills how you: only yellow (as expected)

filtering to see Green ("happy family") photos will show you: only green (as with yellow)

filtering to see Blue photos will show you only Blue, and the same is true for purple.

It seems that Lightroom is filtering by determining whether the string which is assigned to the color label you are using *can be found within* the "label" metadata field, rather than whether that string *is equal to*, i.e. matches, the "label" metadata field. I somehow doubt that this is intentional, since it caused some strange behavior here.

Anyway that did clear up the issue - strange, since I tried making all the labels unique before, and I'm certain it didn't work, but perhaps I forgot to restart the application at that particular point, although I have restarted it multiple times after various attempts at fixing the problem.

So there are two strange behaviors: (1) after making at least some types of changes to color label sets, you must restart for the changes to take effect, and (2) the text of color labels must be absolutely unique, and none may be a substring of another.

Thank you so much for helping me with this issue, everyone. I hope this helps anyone having a similar problem.

Hi Andy,

I think your problem is with the filter; notice that the filter bar shows 4 stars and green selected. Unselect the stars and your blues should disappear.....

Peter

Thank you for the suggestion Peter, but that in fact is the current rating of the currently selected photo. the filter bar is on top. also, the filter bar uses AND logic by default, and I'm not sure that can even be changed, so if it were the filter bar, it should only show green photos which are also rated with four stars.

Peter, he is with Lightroom 2.1. The filters are now at top of screen and he selected "None" which is highlighted. It is in Lightroom 1.x that the filters were below the grid... ;)

Excellent research. I would strongly recommend submitting that as a bug report, in case it's not intended.

I have just finished writing two very detailed bug reports describing the behavior. Again thank you for your help.
