It seems that I've been having a re-occurring issue with filtering and photo's being in a different folders/collection. I'll typically import them all into a collection, then click maybe set some photos under a sub-collection. Staying in the parent collection, I select my favorites. When I click filter by favorites, it seems sometimes it won't include the favorites that I've selected in the sub-collection unless I click to only show pictures from the sub-collection.

Also, it seems that if I have different folders, it sometimes doesn't include all favorited photos even if I just click "my pictures" and filter by favorites. Sometimes there are missing photos which are favorited by won't show up on when I filter. I hope this makes sense, any ideas?

A little clarification, For the same photos whether accessed through the folder or a quick collection, it seems that picks I've selected in the folder aren't updated for the collection, is there something I'm missing?

When you say "select favorites" and "filter by favorites", I'm not familiar with that as LR terminology. (And trust me, LR terminology can be important)

I don't think mention you what version of LR you're using, but I'm not sure it matters.

From the symptoms, I'm going to guess that you're using "Pick" flags to select your favorites, and then filtering on flag status.

If that is indeed the case, you need to be aware that Flag settings are local to the individual grouping and that individual images can have different flag settings in different collections, and also in folder view. This is by design, so that you can do things like having different picks for "Bride's Mother" and "Groom's Mother" collections, etc. The other refining tools, star-rating and color labels are global and stay with the image across different groupings.

If that's not what's going on, can you clarify what you mean by "select favorites"?

Edit:
Ooops, I just noticed the title of your first post "Pick Flags ....", so I assume that I'm at least answering the right question.

Issue

Looks like you answered my question. I wonder how I'm going to handle this. Is there anything universal? When I make my pics, they are my favorite pictures for myself.

Color Labels, Star Ratings and Keywords are global.

Figure out a strategy with one of those. 5 star favorites, Red favorites, add a keyword "Favorite".

Or you could create a "Favorites Collection".

...and depending on how you arrange your workflow using colour labels, if all of your labels are already reserved, you can also create different colour label sets (and switch which one you're using according to your workflow), one of those could be for your 'personal' choices and include your favourites. In the metadata browser you can then search by Label.

In LR2 you will be able to set up smart collections that automatically group pictures with given criteria, so you don't even have to create a collection or go searching for the photos.
