Filter photos shot at specific focal length

There is no direct way to filter for focal length (as far as I am aware) in LR2. However, I have found a work around. Filter using the TEXT option and make sure that "searchable metadata" and "starts with" are selected then type the focal length you want to filter say "17 mm" If you just type 17 without the " mm" you will also filter out focal lengths of 17' mm to 179mm.

You can filter for focal length in LR2 if your EXIF data stores it.
Using the Library Filter: [menu VIEW -Show Filter Bar (\) ]
Select 'Metadata'
Your should see: Date - Camera - Lens - Label across the top
Under Lens you should find your lenses listed.

This is only in the Library Module.

I have no problem to find my lenses. I wanted to filter photos of a particular focal length... 17mm with my 17-85 zoom lens. My work around is the only way I have found to do it. That is why I posted in the tips and tricks as I thought it may be useful yo other users but my post has been moved to general discussion for some reason.

This may well be camera specific but I cannot get your tip to work properly. In fact I think that the search facilities themselves in LR 2 do not work as expected. The following shows that where ISO (or any other exif) has the same value as the focal length, they will be included.

Changing the search to Contains All should work also but does not

When searching for '4'' mm' I also get all photos included shot at 1/4'' sec and even 1/4''' sec. Of course we can outfilter these with a smart collection but that would be very time consuming.

I hope Adobe can find a workaround for this, I would find it very useful. Would be even better if we were able to create smart filters like 'Focal length is greater than ..' and 'Focal length is less than ..'!

I would be very interested to know how please. Because LR2 is looking for any field containing '4''', the following returns no images because the second criterion cancels the first - or am I being silly:frown:

Try setting it to:

Match all of the following rules:
ISO Speed Rating is not 4''
Shutter Speed is greater than 1/4'' sec

And then search for '4'' mm' in the search field as Mark described in the first post.

Filter on range of focal length

Since it has been moved to general discussion, I'd like to continue the thread. First of all, thanks for the tip on how to filter on a particular focal length. A related issue that I've been struggling with is to filter on range of focal length. For instance on my 1'-2' mm, I'd like to be able to find all photos taken on the wide range (say 1'-12 or 1'-14 mm). ACDSee has a simple version of this in their Auto Categories, where you can sort on Wide, Normal or Tele - but I'd like to define ranges myself - and of course do it in Lightroom in stead.
Anyone who has an idea about how to achieve that?

I found this thread via Google. Apologies as it seems quite old. I hope Adobe can add a FL filter. It would be nice to not just see the 4''mm shots, but on the top filter bar to quickly scan what mm length I use on different zooms, at different apertures, etc. The filter bars been a great help in deciding lens purchases. FL would help put in that last needed data piece.
