File types not recognizable

I am using LR 2.3 and everything worked fine until about two weeks ago. Now when I try to import Nikon Raw files from a CF card, LR responds with something like there are no files it recognizes and no imports. It imported about 3' images tonight and then refused to import the others.

If I copy the images to an external drive, there is no problem with the import.

The only change I am aware of is an update a few weeks ago to XP.

Any suggestions?

Gary, welcome to the forums. Although I haven't seen that specific problem, there are frequently 'oddities' in reading directly from cameras or cards(readers). They tend to be difficult to trouble shoot, and like the old joke, "Doc, it hurts when I do this." "Well, don't do that anymore." It's good you're not totally dead, having found a usable work-around.

Have a look at the standard trouble shooting steps our guru Victoria put together. See if any of that helps.

As you say, we've also encountered weirdness, particularly with ancillary devices, after the weekly MS Windows Update Tuesdays, when device drivers get "updated" with older drivers. This is generally video related, but perhaps.....?
