I import JPEG files of approx. 2 MB size into LR6.
When exporting them again, the size is reduced to approx. 700kB.
Why is that?

Solution
Two possibilities occur to me:
  • What have you specified for Quality?
  • Have you resized the image?

Solution
Every time you create (by Export) a JPG image file there is some compression that occurs. That is the 'nature' of the JPG file.
If you were to Edit and Save the same JPG file several times you might notice it gets smaller each time and JPG artifacts begin to degrade the quality of the image.
