After a lot of umming and arring decided to make some file name changes and thought I would share my experience.

Reason was that I have a number of files (in different folders) with exactly the same file name. This was because I had gone around the "clock" (_MG_''''.CR2 to _MG_9999.CR2) and then started again at _MG_''''.CR2. So had duplicate file names commencing with _MG_.

I held back changing the file names because everything was working ok and did not want to screw everything up. However, recently had a issue where this caused a bit of confusion and so I decided rename.

I wanted to retain as much of the original file name as possible and so what I did was just rename _MG_.xxxx.CR2 to _M__.xxxx.CR2. I had about 7''' files to change and so selected all 7''' and put them in the quick collection. I then set the renaming template and tried to change all 7''' at once. After about 3' mins the progress bar had barely moved and so I cancelled and then just selected around 5''-1''' photos and changed those, and then another 1'''. This was much quicker than trying to do them all at once (even with the extra file selecting) and the whole operation took only about 45 mins.

I had a few psd files (fortunately only 14) for which the numbering got totally screwed up. I had to set these back to the original file name and then manually change them !! Not sure why LR did not recognise the original suffix with the -Edit ??

Also as the earlier photos now start with _M__ and the later ones _MG_ when sorted by file name they are also sorted by capture date.

I use GW2''91'15-XXXXX.DNG with XXXXX being a sequence number for the yearly file count. But you could easily just place YMD + original file name for yours and there would be no confusion.
