I have discovered a glitch. I just discovered in LR 1.4.1 that rename doesn't completely work. Here is what I did:
I renamed all the files (JPEG and NEF) in a session I recently shot.
The names changed in LR.
The files names changed when I looked at the original files in the Finder.
However - when I exported the images as new JPEGS they kept their original filenames.

Example:
Import file as DSC_''1.NEF
Change file name in LR to Elainex''1.NEF
When I export the file as a JPEG it comes out as DSC_''1.JPEG

Is there something I am missing here that will avoid this in the future?

What setting do you have set when you output? Do you have output original filename?

I can't check right now so see if it works on mine but I am sure someone else will before I can get home to check tonight.

Is it possible that you're using custom file naming on export?

If my memory serves me right there is an option in the custom file naming menu to use the original filename, as opposed to just the (current) filename.

When you rename a file in LR a new field appears on the Metadata panel called Original Filename that contains the original filename at time of import, whilst the new name goes into the (normal) Filename field.

But, like, Andrew, I'm going to check this tonight as my memory could be imagining things  ;)

Edit: just checked and confirm that the file naming dialog does indeed allow you to choose 'Filename' or 'Original Filename' - check to see which is selected when you are exporting. The example above the panel shows you a live example, i.e. actual selected image filename if you were to use that option, so that you can verify it's what you want.

That's an excellent thought, and I'm betting you've got it absolutely right.
