file numbers...

How do I, when looking at my imported pictures in LR 2.' library, see the file number?

at the bottom, instead of saying something like (16' of 183).cr2, I would like it to say something like 5467.cr2.

PS. Could I do a search by file number? For example, I have 15 or so pictures written down.(rather I have the file #'s written down) It would be nice if I could type them in somewhere in LR, click on Find, and poof, have them right there.:-)

Joe,
In the tool bar (hit T to access) there is an "Info" option which will display the info for the selected file. Also you can display each files number by selecting that option in View Options or CMD-J.

I checked the "info" option, all it did was give me the info in the form attached.

It says (22 of 5'8).cr2

In Grid view, right click an image, and at the bottom of the drop down, select View Options. Select filname as one of the 'Extras'.

In Loupe view, Library menu > View Options > Loupe tab, (or hit ctrl-J) select filename as a display option. I toggles the Info Display on or off, Ctrl-I cycles through the two optional views and off.

In either view, expose the filmstrip, the name of the selected file should be shown on the filmstrip, if more than one file is selected, hover the mouse over the thumbnail of interest.

To search, make sure the filter bar is exposed, at the top of the library window. If not in view, press "\", backslash to open it. Select 'Text'. Then choose, Filename, Contains All, and enter the fragment of the file name to search for. That should display all images in the current view (folder, collection, etc) that match the criterion.


Edit: to attach a file, make sure you're in advanced reply mode, and look for the Manage Attachments button below the reply box, press that, choose a file and hit upload. The reason the inline didn't work, is the image has to be available on the Web, and apparently your C:\ drive isn't (like most).

This is an example of what I mean. The 3 on the top are exports from Breeze Browser Pro, exactly what I need.
The 3 lower ones are exports form LR, useless for my needs. I *need* the filenames since I have thousands of pictures to look through.

Heck, how in the world do you post attachments here??
I uploaded the picture to Flickr (I also tried it on image shack)
I copied the URL
I clicked on the Insert Image button at the top of this window and pasted the URL in.
What am I doing wrong?

Anyway..BBPro Export..."Image 563'.jpg
LR Export......."Butte agility, Saturday(2 of 5'9).jpg

Is a finder window like an Explorer Window on Windows? (I don't know Mac terminology)
Anyway, the file name in the form 1234.jpg or 1234.cr2 is what I need. This is what BB Pro does.


The way LR does it, at least the way it's set up so far, is worthless to me.
LR looks like (34 of 5'8).jpg (or word to that effect)

Joe from what I see and understand (and I may have it upside down!!) BB reads it as a file browser, whereas LR is reading the file name. What BB does is similar ti=o what I see in a Finder window on my Mac.

I take pictures of dog agility trials. I then sell people CD's with their dogs pictures on them.

For example, I might get an email that says "please make a CD for me with 6547.cr2, 4576.cr2 on it"

With BB, I can simply look for the filenumbers and export them to a folder. So far, I can't do that with lightroom.

If you look on my website,

you will notice that each picture has it's filename in the lower left corner. That is, except for the first batches in May before I knew how to just isolate the filename and not have all the exif data there.:-)

E.g. enter 6453 ,6458, 5467,

Select a folder and search from it to limit it to a folder.

do you mean I type in the numbers? Or do I just type in random numbers, or what?
In any case, I wasn't able to get it to do anything like the way I need it. I"m using BB for now, I need to get this done and I know how to do it there.
But I just bought LR, and would like to actually use it.:D

EDIT: What I want to get LR to do is to display the file number, eg. 5467.cr2 when I am looking at the picture.

Just type in the numbers you want, separating the file numbers by comma's like this: 1234,1235,1245 etc and as Sean stated change the criteria to contains.

You said you wanted to be able to search for file numbers. And that was how.

You've already been told to press I to see the filename overlayed on the image. That seemed to be the answer as far as it can go. The other option is to use larger thumbnails with Expanded cells and the filename as a view option (press G then Ctrl J to setup). To toggle cells types, press J.

I"m sorry, I hadn't seen the "press I to overlay the filename"
However, that doesn't seem to be working correctly.
It gets me this.

It's late, thanks for your help! I'm sure it will be clear to me in the morning, but at this point I can't figure out *where* to enter the file numbers. I tried typing them in the large white box on the right side, but nothing happened. Do I need to press a key to initiate the search?

Also, by the word text, what do I want in the window to the immediate right of the word text? I know I want "contains" in the next window.

I had figured out that it toggled twice, but I didn't know about the CTRL-J. I just tried it, I cannot get it to show the file number.
If I tell it to show the filename (which I would think would be the number), it just gives me what was in the screenshot I sent.
I tried all of the options, none of them would show the file number.

Joe, it's almost 7am here and I need to crash..
post a shot of the whole screen with the View options dialog showing (but not hiding the overlay or the filmstrip).. I'll look at it later if noone else has it figured.
