File named "X" is missing or offline. Can't fix!

This is the second time I've run into this error message w/ LR. The first time nothing worked and I had to re-import all my images. That was a pain in the butt and I don't want to have to do it again.

Every image in LR is displaying this error message. I've tried Right Click on folder > Update folder location and that doesn't work. I don't know what else to do. Any thoughts?

Where is Lightroom expecting to find the files? And when you navigate to that folder on your hard drive, are the photos there?

What happens if you click on one of the question marks and point it in the correct direction?

LR is expecting to find the files under My Documents > My Pictures. I've pointed to that directory using "Locate files" and nothing happens. When I look inside the "My Pictures" folder all the files are there.

I installed a new 3 in 1 printer last night and up to that point, LR was working flawlessly. I don't know if that has anything to do with the problem.

I guess it's possible Bret.

Try the clicking on the question mark directly on one of the files, rather than the folder, and see if that works.

I tried that too, and it didn't work. Interestingly, none of the folders are in red. I thought any missing or offline files were supposed to show up in red?

So where is it saying that they're missing or offline? In Develop module?

In Library mode every image has a question mark in the URH corner. In Develop mode it gives me the error message over the top of the photo.

And yet relinking isn't working? Something weird's going on here. Any chance of a screenshot of the folders panel, and the equivalent explorer window?

Don't worry about the fact the folders aren't red - that was LR1.

I'm guiding a client today and have to leave to pick her up. I won't be able to do a screenshot until tomorrow. I'll definitely check in first thing in the morning w/ a screenshot, and hopefully I can resolve this. I'm not terribly positive about it though, considering nothing worked last time and I had to start all over by deleting the main folder and re-importing everything. I'm learning to really dislike LR for this problem...

Something weird's going on Bret - you shouldn't have to keep doing that, and it's the first time I've heard of it. Don't delete the catalog, or at least make a backup before you go removing files - I'd be interested in taking a look it with everything missing, and at the screenshots too. If something weird is going on, Adobe will want to know.

I just remembered that I did my usual back-up of my HD to an external HD on Friday. I went away for the weekend and this problem occurred on Monday when I tried to use LR for the 1st time since doing the back-up. Not sure if backing up the HD caused some kind of conflict w/ LR?

That Library module screenshot is particularly interesting - if LR thought the folders were missing, the folders should have question marks on. So it knows where the folders are, it just can't find the photos inside them.

Can you double-check in Explorer and confirm that the correctly named files are definitely in the right folders? Could they have been renamed somewhere along the line, something like that?

Brett, was LR open when the backup was going on?

Geoff: I'm not sure if LR was open but most likely, it was.

Victoria: I've checked the folders more times than I can count, and they are all where they are supposed to be. The files are inside of them, too.

This can cause issues as LR may be doing stuff in the background. Best to close LR. Certainly with Timemachine etc there have been issues.

That's excellent thinking Geoff. You could well be right.

Bret, any chance of a look at the catalog file (no previews)? Opening it in an SQLite Browser will show the database as text, and it could be interesting to see what it's actually got there, as opposed to what it should have. If that's ok, you could put it on my server (http://vbftp.net - just follow the instructions)

I was actually offering to do it for you Bret! ;) I'm no expert, by any means, but I have figured out how to stare blankly at them.

FWIW, I was playing with this Firefox plugin recently. Obviously only open a copy, not the original!

Bret, got your catalog safely. I'm no expert, but I've been comparing against another Windows catalog and there's nothing that immediately stands out to me. I'm probably missing something!

Any chance of a screenshot of Explorer showing: C:/Documents and Settings/Bret Edge/My Documents/My Pictures/raw files/utah/moab/west/2''8/12/ or one of the folders containing imported.CR2 files please?
