I just encountered a very strange problem - the filename of all the photos in a sub-folder were changed - not by me - after I had labelled them individually using my own three part file name system (date - object no. - photo no.). The critical middle section is what all the photos were changed to - one object number. How could this happen? I did not do a batch filename change. I did apply a copyright preset to all the photos in this folder, which was successfully applied, however that should not affect the file name, and I've just tested this out on some other photos to ensure I wasn't missing anything. Is this some weird glitch?

No, it is not some weird glitch, at least not one I have ever heard of. Lightroom does not change file names all by itself, so despite that you say you did not do it, my suggestion is that you did. I just can’t tell you how exactly, because I wasn’t there.

I agree with Johan. Perhaps some preset that you have used includes a file name into preset.

It would seem simple enough to use your own three part file naming preset to name them again as you wish.

Thank you Johan and Cletus. I certainly agree it is more logical to assume I did create this change. There are numerous objects photographed, each with its own number, so it is actually very time-consuming to re-number, so I was trying to figure out how it might have happened to avoid recurrence and was also seeking reassurance that it doesn't sound like a corrupt software issue. Thank you for the very helpful feedback and prompt responses.
