file counts missing in folder view but files are on disk

I was just doing some keywording when I realized the keyword counts did not add up so I started drilling down. What I found makes no sense. In the first screen grab you can see the left folder view shows ... but there are 6 in the grid view. In the second screen grab the Mac finder shows the 6 pictures! I tried 'Update folder location' and nothing changed. A quick glance at more of that folder structure shows more of that weird behaviour.
If someone can explain that is great, but more important is to tell this foolish old man how to make it make sense.

Problem solved at least re the missing files. At one time I converted a bunch of CR2 files to DNG. When I found the help description, it gave me two methods, and one involved using the CR2 files, the other just renaming and resyncing. The later was easier with Mac's bulk rename option. None of my pictures in the last 9 yrs was affected and prior to that very few edits but AFAIK the virtuals were unaffected and I always edit only virtuals.
Now I just need to figure out what the GPU settings should be.

It looks like you might have a corrupt Helper.lrdata package (notice that the All Photographs total is less than the folder panel total for the "PhotosGoHere" parent folder). I suggest you close LrC, open the catalog folder in Finder and delete the associated "catalog name Helper.lrdata" package. Then restart LrC and see if all now looks OK.

Some improvement, the counts are there in the left folder view, but grid has 2 count is 2, but actual finder view is 8. Now ???

The only difference I can see is the filenames are of two different forms. Not sure why, these are old casual photos.

I just noticed that the folder 2009-09-12 has 6 files and one of them 2009-09-12-0218.DNG is NOT in the grid view, BUT the file counts are correct at 6.

Well it's going south fast now. Some symptoms are, after quit it sits for many seconds, sometimes it crashes on startup, The Info display sometimes works sometimes does not depending maybe on GPU settings which I think I have tried all combos but at the moment I am pretty much dead in the water. I will ry with no GPU.

Solved part of the mystery. In one folder with 8 dng files only 2 show up in folder view/grid. I noticed the two that show up are named different, so I renamed one of the missing to add the -IMG- in front of the seq number and voila it now shows up.
