I get that error message anytime I try to look at a photo in Lightroom 1.4 that came from Noise Ninja. Noise Ninja saved JPGs have always worked in the past, but now all of a sudden (don't remember when this started happeneing...maybe after update to 1.4?). Anyone else see this problem? Like I said, this always worked fine in the past - other applications continue to see Noise Ninja saved JPGs just fine. Windows default picture viewer, nikon view, nikon capture nx, etc....they all see them fine, just not Lightroom! :(

See the 2 blank thumbnails below? That's an example. When you open one, it says "File appears to be unsupposrted or damaged"

Update (already). I don't know why, but after I closed and opened LR, now the files show up correctly. They still had the blank thumbnail, but when I clicked on them they loaded the image correctly. Weird. This happened on 2 different machines.

Hi d2''4me, welcome to the forum!

Have you updated to 1.4.1 now? There were some jpeg import bugs in 1.4 which were fixed in 1.4.1, so that's the best place to start. Nice pictures, anyway!

I've found that periodically optimizing my catalogs heads off these kinds of problems before they occur, so I usually do it at the same time I save my backups (weekly).

There are two ways to optimize or test the integrity of your catalog:
1. From Lightroom go to File > Catalog Settings > Relaunch and Optimize

2. Press the CTRL key then click the icon to start Lightroom. You will be presented with a dialog box, where one of the options is to "Test integrity of this catalog" i.e. the catalog selected from the drop-down list. Check that box and whatever it does usually takes care of the problems I've encountered with Lightroom.

Ok now I'm starting to get mad :( This thread was started because of this problem was happening on my laptop. Now, it's happening on my home PC (the machine info in my signature, as well as my LR version). Nothing I do (including all the suggestions here in this thread) help. It's ONLY JPG files i save out of Noise Ninja. Any other application sees the JPG fine but it's only LR that will not see the JPG correctly. I'm using Noise Ninja 2.1.1 I've never had any problem at all with LR and Noise Ninja. This only seems to have happened since I updated to the newest version of LR. I don't know what to think. It makes no sense. It reads all the EXIF info on the photo but just won't show the photo. If this keeps up, LR will become fairly useless for me :( I need to get this resolved. Any more ideas?

Ok, I've just been having a play... and I can get 1.3 to see a Noise Ninja'd file fine, but 1.4.1 shows a great box in import but then imports ok. So perhaps you're using different save settings? Definitely interested in a file!

You know what? I wonder if this has anything to do with LR 2 Beta? I installed that a few weeks ago and played around with it...then I uninstalled it. The timing seems to be about right for when certain JPGs had trouble showing up right. Nothing else seems to make sense. Like I said, all other applications see the same JPG just fine. LR is the only thing having trouble with it.

Interesting Jon!

Ok, I imported into 1.3.1 with no problem whatsoever.

I then tried 1.4.1 - no preview in the Import dialog, an exclamation mark (error) in the Grid view, but then clicking on it opened ok.

And I tried 2.' which imported perfectly, which also fits with the other problem jpeg imports I've seen too. I've already got a report in about the others - I'll update to include this.

So Jon, are you seeing this with ALL noise ninja'd files? What are your save settings set to?

Let me know if you still need more answers. yes, happens to all JPGs saved by Noise Ninja and that's odd. Here are my save options in noise ninja - nothing special really...

P.S. You mentioned you can actually view the file once you click on it. Same thing here on my laptop but only when I go to the Develop module. I can't see it no matter what in the Library Module. I need to try this at home to see if it's the same - working in Develop Module but not in Library Module I mean. I don't remember if I even tried to view it in the Develop module at home after I saw that it didn't work in the Library module.

It'll be interesting to know if you can view the image in Library AFTER you've viewed it in Develop Jon.

Yes, I can. Quite odd indeed. I need to try this at home and see if it does the exact same thing. I'm pretty sure I tried it in the Develop module at home but I could be mistaken. I'll try it when I go home after work today.

I saw the same thing in Beta 2.'. there were two small sets of Jpegs which showed up as unreadable. As they were simply subsets of existing TIF files, I generated a new set in each case and overwrote the tricky files, so I don't have the ones which were causing the trouble.

Not much help I know, but I thought I would register the fact of seeing this phenominon in Beta 2.'.

Ok I'm home now and tried to view the photo with the problem over in the Develop Module. I CAN see it in the develop module and when I go back to the library module, it's fine there too. So there seems to be some odd library module problem. I guess the work around is to view the photo in the develop module first if you want to see it in the library module. Not an ideal situation, but for now that'll have to do.

Ok, that IS interesting. It sounds like a fault in the image preview building in 1.4 / 1.4.1 and switching to Develop triggers it correctly. Thanks for checking that - I'll update the report. At least you can rest assured that the 2.' update fixes it, if an intermediate update doesn't.

Ok, one final thing for you to check Jon, which I've just thought of... what preview setting do you have set in the Import dialog? I'm wondering if you're set to minimal, which reads the embedded preview, and the embedded preview isn't reading properly. What happens if you set to Standard previews? Renders correctly for me.

Just checked - set to Minimal previews when I import. Out of curiousity, I'll set it to Standard on the next Noise Ninja test and see what happens.

Bingo - try selecting the files and going to Library > Previews > Render Standard Previews. That should do the trick. It seems that those files don't have embedded previews (or Lightroom doesn't like them...?), and for some reason Lightroom isn't forcing a standard preview render. So either render manually or set it to render standard previews in the import dialog.
