1. Why does LR not write to xmp at the first change you showed in your process? (the unused slider)
2. Does not xmp 'care' about file extension?

Follow -up - did not work for me - LR showed failed to write to file

Sam, I've just been back and double checked, and you're right, there's a difference between Bridge (where it does write to an external xmp file if the DNG's readonly) and LR (where the write simply fails). Thanks for pointing that out!
