External DVD writer ??

Hi there,

since I couldn't find any reference to "DVD" on this forum, here's my challenge:

I have a **fast** external DVD writer (usb) attached to my Windows XP PC. Now I want to use the LR Export preset "BURN DNG to DVD" that works quite well with my internal **slow** DVD writer.

However the dialog at the end of the export LR presents me with a choice of writers (2: the internal DVD writer and the internal CD writer) that does not include my external DVD writer.


Any clue how to solve this? Thank you very much!!

Welcome to the forum!

I'm not windows based any more, so hopefully someone else will have a few more ideas.

A workaround, if we can't find a solution - you could always export the files to your hard drive and then use your normal dvd burning software.

Are you running the latest 1.3.1 release?

Thanks Vicky. I was amazed at finding this forum. I've been using LR from launch (the beta messed up some stuff here though) and use it every day. I am running 1.3.1 of course.

Sure I can burn my dvd's in a number of other ways, but I like to make a little keystrokes as possible, hence my question...

In the early days, Lightroom used the Sonic libraries to burn. If they still do, it may be the libraries don't know about your burner. Post the make and model and perhaps we'll find someone else has it working or not.

LR still uses the Sonic Libraries. However, I am pretty sure they haven't been updated since 1.'.

There is one thing you didn't mention: In your file manager, does the drive have a letter assigned to it? (Like E: F: G: etc)

It is not always necessary to have such a letter assigned to work with a drive but some (many) applications require one to see them!

I did not checked for Lightroom capability here yet...

Yes, it is recognized by Windows and Assigned a drive letter (it lists the device as "Dvd-ram Station (H"
