external data drives full - how to start moving files?

I'm using Lightroom 2.3 on an iMac running OS X 1'.4.11

My data drive is an external ministack v2 5''GB, which is copied 3 times a week to an identical second drive

My LR catalog is stored on a partition on the internal drive, which is also cloned 3 times a week using SuperDuper

With my external data drives filling up, I am looking at the possibility of using a device like the NewerTech Voyager and some "naked" SATA drives to start archiving some of the older images

I'm unsure how to do this properly so that LR will know where those archived files are when I'm looking for them in future

Some of the older files are in jpg format, all of the new files are RAW and I export to DNG or jpg as needed

Any assistance appreciated

Welcome to the forum! Can you explain what you mean by "archiving" older images? LR does not offer any type of archiving within the program, so are you planning to just migrate your files to a larger drive, or are you looking to create a new, separate catalog for images that you do not wish to have easy access to?

There are a number of approaches to this.

One is to simply move the physical files on the existing hard drive that you want to "archive" to the new hard drive (keeping the folder structure in tact). You can then open your catalog, right-click the recently moved folders in the Library module and select the new location.

breyman's answer sounds right to me

I'm moving, for example, 2''7-2''8 files onto an external drive that wont be permanently connected to my iMac

If I need to get those old files, I dont want to have to import them into LR all over again

I'll know where the files are by job ID, so it should be as simple as plugging in the drive and clicking on the folder in LR to see the drives

And depending on your version of Lightroom, for version 1, the folders will turn red and with version2, the green light beside the drive name or letter will go off when drive is unplugged. That's it; just plug back when needed. You can still perform searches without the drive...
