Exporting to FTP site with Lightroom?

Hi there,

I'm testing out a free trial of Lightroom to see if it will be able to work for my uses.

I want to be able to keep files on my server, but organize them in different ways in Lightroom (basically, I'm trying to eliminate having multiple copies of the same file on my server). Before, I would create new folders on my server in order to make buckets of images. This takes up a lot of space...

I also want to be able to export files to an FTP site directly from the collections or library view in Lightroom.

Can anyone tell me if this seems like the right tool for my purposes?

If I understand you properly, this is a major advantage of Lightroom ... you can have your image in multiple Lightroom Collections, and make virtual copies of images with different edits from one to the other, and you only need one copy of your original photo.

I believe that the web module in Lightroom can upload photos to an FTP site.

Very true. Although, it's not known for its robustness.And it's meant more for uploading an entire gallery structure, as opposed to individual/selected images.

I don't know of a way (built-in or plug-in) to do it directly from the export module. I believe an FTP tool is provided with the Software Development Kit (SDK) found here. (Some assembly required)

The FTP plugin is in the sample plugins folder with the SDK. Just unzip the SDK download and install as any other plugin.

And once the FTP plugin is set up correctly, you can have presets for specific folders on your server making the export process even easier.
