I work for a TV station. I've been taking stock photos and have accumulated about 5'' to put into our digital asset management system called CatDV (for us it's mainly for video, but it can handle images). While CatDV recognizes Jpegs and Tifs, it doesn't seem to handle viewing DNGs very well.

CatDV did read the technical metadata (ap, iso, camera model, etc), but didn't find the keywords I gave to each and every photos already.

After looking on here yesterday, I decided to try the LR/Transporter plug-in because it came recommended several times. But I need more help with it. I've tried exporting an image as a TIF with that plug in activated, but I'm not seeing any additional TXT files with it. I was hoping that at least if I could create the text file, I could use that to import into CatDV.
What am I missing or doing wrong?

I added the token for Keywords, but feel I've missed some very plain and obvious step. Or perhaps this isn't the way to go at all?

Or more depressingly, am I just going to have to redo all the keywords by hand in CatDV anyway?

Welcome Schweethart!

Effectively, CatDV doesn't offer support for DNG. But as it is designed with the goal of finding where are your pictures/videos, can you simply export tiny TIFFS or JPEGS (even just 1'' pixels wide) to the same location as the original folder? Then, knowing where is the TIFF/JPEG in CatDV is also telling where to find the DNG...

EDIT: Don't forget to also include metadata at export time.

Another possibility is that you actually do not write the XMP data back to the DNGs. You can do so by hitting Cmd-S or Ctrl-S (you didn't filled your system specs in your forum's profile) or by activating the preference to automatically write XMP data in Lightroom. Then, CatDV may probably see what you added in Lightroom.

How fabulous that you know of CatDV!
I did consider exporting matching jpegs just so they'd show up in the catalogue and anyone looking for photos could see what they were getting before dealing with the DNG. So I'm glad to know that idea was on the right track. :)

I'm running Lightroom on Windows Vista, CatDV is running on previous windows OS.

In fact, I never heard of it until you made your inquiry. I just gone to the product' site and studied its capacities to help you. I know I answered in 11 minutes but I am a fast reader. ;)

LOL You must be a real keener. :)

Ok, so I've gone into LR and checked the metadata option for XMP anywhere I could find it. Are you suggesting that I put in all my keywording, etc, highlight allllll the images I plan to export, hit Ctrl+S, and then export?

Ok, I tried that. I exported them as TIFs this time because CatDV handles Tifs better than DNGs. At this point, I'd really just love to get the keywords to transfer over, but it's not happening.

What should I try with LR/Transporter. Do I need to put the keywords on each image separately with that plug-in or can it take what I've already typed in the Library module?

I've used it a fair bit. What are you trying to end up with?

I'm trying to get the Keywords field data to transfer along with my image when I export it as a TIF, or DNG. Then I want that info to show up when I open the image in an archive system called CatDV. It's reading the technical data of the image (ap, ss, iso, etc) but nothing else that I've populated in LR. So far, it's looking like I'll have to manually do all the keywording again in CatDV.

I'm wondering if I can at least get LR/Transporter to create a txt file (which I think that's what it does, right?) then I can import that into CatDV.

I dunno...maybe I'm better off just doing it by hand in CatDV but it seems like a waste since I've already done the work in Lightroom.

Schweethart, just to be sure... do you have the checkmark removed from "Minimize embedded metadata" at the bottom of the dialog box when you export?
