Exported File Size v Quality

Greetings,

I'm using LR 2.2 on a Macintel and would like to export files for the web somewhere around 3'KB. As a benchmark I'm looking at files that are 4'' pixels along the top edge. Some sites manage to retain excellent quality images with these dimensions and tiny small sizes, but I'm finding that for me to be able to hit those file sizes in Lightroom at those dimensions, I have to compromise quality to the point where the images look terrible. Any suggestions on how I can achieve both or am I going to have to use a different tool for the job?

Welcome to Lightroom Forums!

Lightroom includes some fairly large metadata elements in exported files, even if you check the "minimize embedded metadata" box.

The biggest one is often the embedded preview. You can strip this (and other elements) on export using Jeffrey Friedl's Metadata Wrangler.

Thanks! Problem solved. Surprising you don't get this kind of control natively within the app. No wonder those files where huge.

Thank you for this! I was wondering why my uploaded images were so big! Metadata Wrangler is now in place and making life a little more efficient. A very useful additional tool in the arsenal.

Maybe this should go in Tips and Tricks - it's not something you would necessarily think about, but Wrangler gives you a whole lot better control over what information you send out with your images.

Does this help even when we create Web flash galleries in LR i.e. does it strip the information for the JPEGs created for web galleries or works only for Export JPEG option.

It is for JPEG Export only but what you can do is: After exporting the Web Gallery, make an JPEG Export using Metadata Wrangler and overwrite the larges JPEGs of the gallery taking care not to rename.
