Hey,

My name is Phil. I've been a forum member for a while now but this is my first post. Photography is just a hobby for me at this point but I'm slowly turning it into more than that.

My question is related to storing photos offline. I shot a wedding reception for a friend recently and I've finished working on the files. I've successfully exported the files to dvd with all the lightroom adjustments, labels, etc. My question is, if I still want the previews in lightroom but I don't want the files on the computer how do I do that. Must I delete the files off the computer and reimport them from the dvd or is there another way to do this more efficiently? Also, if I reimport them won't that just copy a new version to my HDD again?

If anyone has some incite into this I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Phil

Welcome Phil! Glad you've gathered up the courage to post - we don't bite, honest! :)

Are the files raw or jpeg? Assuming they're raw, and on the DVD are the same untouched files with their sidecars, I would...

1. Write to DVD
2. Delete (or move in case you want to undo if it doesn't work) the files from the hard drive so that LR can't find them when it reopens.
3. Reopen LR - that folder should go red as the pictures are missing, and the thumbnails will gain little question marks in the corners.
4. Right click on the red folder and choose 'Locate Missing Folder' or click on a question mark, and point to the files on the DVD.
5. It should automatically update the location of the raw files.

Thanks

Thank you for such a quick response. I will try this and let you know how it goes. As to not having posted before, I just didn't have any issues that hadn't already been addressed. This is such an active group and support around Lightroom is so good in general that I can usually find answers very quickly. I do love the support.

Thanks everyone.

Thanks for posting this question I want to do the same thing, but for the life of me I could see how. 8)

and thank you Victoria for the answer, simple when you think about it.

Glad it's working for you guys!
