Export sharpen options - are there more?

I am at the point where I am seeing the usefulness of LR in terms of producing quick JPG's for print or web based on the changes I make to the RAW file.

The one thing I am having trouble with is export sharpening and the lack of options. I find 'standard' a little soft and "high" too aggressive. Is there any hidden options or third party gear that allows me to have more control over the sharpening? 'Low", 'Medium" and 'high" is a very blunt tool IMHO.

Hi Alfisti!

There are more options for sharpening in the Develop module. Also, 3rd party options can be used as external editors if they can function as a stand-alone and not just a PS plugin.

I would also use the link above and make a feature request for more output sharpening controls.

I'd look at turning up the capture sharpening in Develop module a little, and combining that with the Medium setting, to get a pretty good control.

Alternatively, LR2/Mogrify is an export plugin that will allow USM controls, if you don't want to go to another program entirely.

Thanks for the feedback.

DOing a search I see a combination of capture and export sharpening is a whole new can of worms. My normal worflow before LR was to open in ACR, create duplicates in CS3 and then and only then would I sharpen.

I think I need to investigate 'Mogrify' whatever the heck that is. To the search function and beyond!

I have used the Mogrify (Image Magik) sharpening functions which I found very good but the controls are quite different than unsharpmask in Photoshop. You will need to do a Google search to find the instructions.

However since the improved resizing/sharpening functions in LR V2.x I have not been using the Mogrify settings that often. LR 2.x is a major/significant improvement from V 1.4.1.

I knew other development settings are broght across in the export process but I was under the impression that the capture sharpening did not hence we have the choice, as part of the export feature, Sharpening for "Monitor View', 'Print etc.

I THINK? I remember reading or hearing on a video that The sharpening in both? export and print is automagically adjusted according to how much sharpening was applied during develop, along with, of course, what setting one chooses. Is this true or did I dream it? If so, that's one smart algorithim. But there are a lot of smart things in LR, so I guess it's possible.

LR 2.''s sharpening methods are based on PixelGenius's sharpening plugins for Photoshop. LR takes into account the amount of sharpening you have applied in the Develop module (Capture Sharpening) and adjusts Output Sharpening accordingly when you export an image or other output such as for the web or print. You may have seen a discussion of LR sharpening in 2.' in a video from Michael Riechman and Jeff Schewe available at the Luminous Landscape web site.

Yes, I have watched the LR, and Camera to print videos (both good). I couldn't remember if that's where I picked up that info from or if I had read it on a forum somewhere.
Sharpening in all its forms in LR works well, but it would be nice to know a little more about what's going on under the hood. For us photographer types that want to control everything "from camera to print" that's just one of those little things that nag at you.
