result. Any other suggestions? I'm stuck.

On the performance tab in Preferences, turn off "Use Graphics Processor". You might take look at available freespace for temporary file on your Primary disk. And if your hardware supports it, upgrade to Catalina 10.15.4

Thanks for your suggestions. Sadly, turning off the graphics processor (Metal: NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M) does not appear to have made a difference. I've got almost 300GB of available space on primary hard drive, and photos are stored on external drive connected by USB3. Not sure what changed, but this problem just cropped up after regular part-time use of LR Classic.. I've rebooted system, shut down and started up. No change. Switch to Catalina is not an option at the moment. I welcome any other advice., and welcome any other advice..

What happens if you create a new catalog and import a single photo, just as a test? Does that work?
