Since upgrading to LR2 from 1.4 I have about 1' folders in which every image (maybe 8''-1''' images out of 1'k in the whole catalog) is showing a rectangular icon with an exclamation mark which gives the tooltip "Error writing metadata". I seem to be able to edit these files ok, and their metadata appears intact, but nothing I do makes the errors disappear. All folders are on my local hard drive inside the main Pictures folder and contain a mixture of NEF raw files and jpgs. All show the same problem, and I've no idea why these particular folders have been chosen - I've run a check on the hard disk (its a RAID 1 array) with no errors flagged.

Can someone tell me how to get rid of the error icon?

Running on Win Vista 32, 3GB ram, CoreDuo processor.

Try selecting them and pressing Ctrl-S which should write the metadata to file (you could just select all in Grid view, rather than selecting just those). That'll clear up which ones couldn't write, and that's usually down to folder permissions in my experience.

Thanks Victoria. Saving the xmp does indeed fix the problem.

The curiosity is that I never use xmp files, and have Automatic write to xmp unchecked, so why does LR say it can't write the metadata? Its clearly written to the catalog ok, and doing a Crtrl-S as you suggest successfully creates xmp files. I've just saved them all and then deleted them, and all now seems ok. Wierd!

Ah good, oh well, keeps it happy!
