Hi

I am getting a message " LR encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit."
and "LR will attempt to fix next time it launches."

Reloading programme, rebooting PC, and clean install programme fails to clear.

What is the problem and how to fix?

Open the Lightroom catalog folder. The default location is your Pictures folder. In the catalog folder there is a folder called 'catalogname Previews.lrdata'. That is the culprit. Move it to a place outside the catalog folder or trash it completely. Then start Lightroom again. All should now be well, but because Lightroom has to rebuild this folder you will initially not see any thumbnails. They should start to appear again one by one however.

Hello there.

Spot on, am very grateful. It can be painful sorting out some of these silly issues and the forum does a wonderful job. Yet another reason not to migrate but keep with LR despite the unfortunate changes.
