A key reason for my purchasing the Epson 3800 (after a lot of research) was the size of the ink cartridges and the improvement in the cost per ml compared to smaller cartridges. Unfortunately, my 3800 came to the end of its life when jets failed for the second time and replacing them was no longer a viable option.
My instinct was to purchase the P900… with its separate ink paths for Matte and Gloss, offset by the smaller cartridges and higher unit ink prices. But….. I sensed the P900 must be close to the end of its market lifespan and was very nervous to buy a product just as its replacement was announced. My printing volumes are much reduced… so was not under pressure.
Luckily, I was able to purchase a second hand P800 from a know source… which works for me as an interim solution. It gets very little current use… but it kicks into life when ever needed and has been very reliable. I cannot ask for more.
I plan to monitor what happens in the 3800, 3880, P800,P900 spaces… and am curious what a replacement might feature, but as I have plenty of ink for now, not in a rush to change.
I have no plans to change from Epson.
