I am probably going to have to ditch my 3880 and am thinking seriously (again) about the P 900. It has mixed reviews and I'm wondering if anyone on this forum has one and how they like it? I am also reluctant because the P900 has been around for about five years and is probably due for a replacement and with my luck, a replacement will come out just after my purchase. Keith Cooper also gives high marks to the 8550. For me, though, I think the P 900 makes the most sense because it is a successor to the 3880.

I was in exactly the same situation approx a year ago, scared I would buy a P900 and then Epson release a new model.

Fortunately for me.. I was able to purchase a P800 used from a reliable source. This was a good interim solution for me.

The pro feature for me re P900 is less waste ink changing from Matte to Gloss.. offset by smaller sized cartridges.
 
I have moved from Epson 3800 to 3880 and to P700 (the smaller P900). I am very happy with the move: less waste when changing from Matte to Glossy, deeper and more intense darker tones on the print (I mainly use Matte paper, love Ilford), better and more reliable paper handling, have to clean the heads less frequent. Cons: smaller cartridges as mentioned above. For the future I hope Epson will move to tank printers also for the photo printers. I have tank printers for my offices and these printers are far better the the earlier ones. If the 8550 can replace the P700/900 is not clear for me, printer profiles for papers I use are still missing, but Keith Coopers tests are promising. Very happy with P700.

Thank you very much for your response. It's good to have a positive review of the 700. I'm guessing (wish I could be more sure) the 900 will be similar to the 700 in quality so your response leans me in favor of going with Epson. I had been considering Canon but the ones comparable to the Epsons in question (310 and 1100) the 310 has a negative because the ink cartridges are too small and the 1100 is to darn heavy (over 70lbs). So I'm leaning toward the p900.
 
Just would like to add one thing: a friend of mine also bought an P700 but also started to use third parties inks, costing half of Epsons. After some time he got some weird colour shift on his prints, not usable prints. After very expensive ink change processes back to Epsons brand the problem disappeared. I will stick to Epsons brand of inks, others may have better experiences.
When the inks are low you get an alert but you don’t have to change now - many more prints can be produced - the printer stops when the ink is really low, then it is time for a replacement. This process is better compare to the 3880.
