Sorry to belabor an issue that has been posted many times, but I can't find a post on this.

I have quite a few photos with embedded previews scattered about. Is there a way to search for photos with embedded previews to change them, or is it really even necessary?

I personally don't bother replacing embedded previews, that will happen automatically when an image with embedded preview starts to be edited. But if it bothers you, you can have LrC automatically replace any embedded previews with Standard previews during idle time. Preferences>General Tab:
