I like the idea of using the embedded previews for culling in the new Classic but...Does anyone know how to determine the size of the embedded previews from cameras? I have searched and found ExifTool, which is a command line tool. It extracted a preview from a Nikon D800 raw file but it is only 570 pixels on the long side! That could not be right.

Operating System: Mac 10.12.6
Exact Lightroom Version (Help menu > System Info):7.0.1

Having a D800 myself, I know t's a full size preview. I'll look later for the Exiftool command line - I probably have it written down somewhere.

You can actually detect see in Lightroom if your preview is less than full size. Import the raw file with the Embedded & Sidecar option, then zoom in at 1:1. If you see "Loading", it's decoding the raw file because the embedded preview is lower res. If not, you've a full res embedded preview.

OK, just checked and the D800 is full size. These Windows command lines extract the full size preview as a file with the same name but "-preview.jpg" suffixed, then copy all the raw file's metadata into it.

Code:
"pathto\exiftool.exe" "R:\Landing zone\NEFs\2017_09\170916 Crowland Abbey\170916_0097 Crowland Abbey.nef" -b -JpgFromRaw -w -preview.jpg -m
"pathto\exiftool.exe" -tagsfromfile "R:\Landing zone\NEFs\2017_09\170916 Crowland Abbey\170916_0097 Crowland Abbey.nef" -exif:all "R:\Landing zone\NEFs\2017_09\170916 Crowland Abbey\170916_0097 Crowland Abbey-preview.jpg" -overwrite_original -m
