Some time ago I came upon a web site that showed how to edit metadata presets. It also showed how to edit the metadata preset default. This was to avoid the need of constantly re-enter things like ones name and address into new presets. I did that and found it useful but now I want to change it. Try as I might, I can't seem to do it in Lightroom nor can I find the web site I found before. I remember it involved editing some obscure file. Now every time I import, the same words come up in the caption field even though I have cleared the caption field in all my presets. Can someone help please?:?

In the metadata menu there is a menu called "Edit Metadata Presets".

The trick is that there is a dropdown box at the top of that which has multiple preset names with different settings each. In the import dialog box there is also a dropdown with a metadata preset name.

If you are having trouble you may be editing a different preset then you are using to import.

You have missed my point but you have given me a clue. If I go: Library>Metradata>Edit Metadata Presets..> it comes up with a default preset form containing data that I want to change. However, if I take the other rout: Library>Import...> I get the import dialogue box. In the Metadata dropdowm menu I choose >Edit Presets... and up comes a completely blank preset form. So why are they different and how can I change. I'd be happy for there to no default data at all if it avoids confusion. It shouldn't be like that. It appears to be a bug.

I am not sure what you are seeing but for me when I open up the edit metadata window from within the import it opens up the a blank custom preset. When I open it up from the metadata menu I get the preset I name "default". Either way, there is a dropdown menu with the list of presets that you can select and are the same.

Since I may not being explaining well, there is not just one set of metadata presets in lightroom. You can setup multiple presets. So when you go into the edit metadata window, you have to select which one you are editing.

If I understand what you are trying to do(which I may not at all) you might try the following steps.

1. Open up the import window and look into the section that it titled "Information To Apply". The word next to "Metadata:" is the name of the preset you are currently using to import. For example, mine says "default".

2. Click in that drop down and select "Edit Presets"

3. At the top of the Edit presets windows there is a drop down box next to the word "Preset:". Click on it and select the one from above. Once again, in my example this is "default".

4. Now when you change your settings they should show up in import.

I hope that helps.

Thanks for your help. I've resolved the problem. It was entirely my own misunderstanding of what LR was doing. The caption field always showed the camera make despite it already being lower down in the metadata. I had wrongly assumed that I put it there in a preset some time ago. I deleted everything I could find to get rid of it to no avail. It always came back, but of course it would because it is a functionality of LR. I can live with that but would be nice if that was made clear somewhere.

I don't believe LR puts anything in the caption field by default.

Could this perhaps be a "feature" of your camera? Or perhaps some other software that is used in your workflow?

At least for Sony, it is a "feature". I ended up creating a metadata preset that blanked out the Caption field on import by clicking on the Caption field and hitting the space bar when I created the preset.

I've had to do what Ken does also. It happens with both my Olympus and Konica Minolta. For the Olympus the caption field on import reads "OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA". For the KM it reads predictably "KONiCA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA". I don't use any other software except Noise Ninja occasionally.
