Editing Smart Objects in CS4 - Filter gallery disabled

When, in LR2.3, I choose "Edit as smart object in CS4" the file appears as a smart object in CS4. I can then switch it to and from ACR by clicking on the corner of the layer box, and I can apply adjustment layers etc - BUT, all the filters in the Filter Gallery eg Artistic, are disabled (greyed out). This also happens if I create a duplicate smart layer, or if I move a normal (not smart) image from LR to CS4. Think I must be missing something obvious.

Hi Jennifer! Welcome to the forums!

Make sure your images are 8-bit and not 16-bit. Not all of the filters are available to 16-bit images.

Many thanks for your reply - you were right - I was using 16 bit.
