Editing Metadata

I'm about, for the first time after testing the process, to import my pictures into LR2. I moved from a Canon S4' P&S to my D8' this summer but initially mis-set the camera's capture date (I hope that's the correct term) to 2''7. The month, day and time were set correctly.

I'd like my 2''8 D8' photos to reside in a 2''8 LR folder in Library. If I take these photos into LR and then change just the year date to 2''8 with LR's metadata editing function, will the photos end up in my 2''8 LR folder on re-opening Library after that or will they maintain the 2''7 capture date used to import them in my custom preset and always reside in the 2''7 folder?

I'd like to avoid downloading a perhaps dubious piece of metadata editing software to deal with this issue before importing th photos into LR.

Hi Jim

Changing the time won't automatically move the files between folders, however you can pick them up within LR and drag them into the other folder. As long as you do it within LR, you won't mess anything up. It should work fine - no need to worry about downloading any other software for that.

If you don't already have a 2''7 folder with S4' files, then you could just rename the 2''7 folder to 2''8 after you edit the metadata in Lightroom.

If you did already have a 2''7 folder, then I would suggest creating a separate catalog with the D8' files. Fix the metadata there, then import the files into the old catalog. (Then you can throw away the temporary D8' catalog.)

Because if you have lots of folders to rename, or lots of images to drag from folder to folder (without doing entire folders, because he has real 2''7 files in the 2''7 folders) it's easier to do it this way than to do it one-by-one.

Thanks Mark, I always look for your explanations!!
Would it not be just as easy to sort by camera (D8') and then date (2''7). Place all of those into a collection, change the metadata and then place them into the 2''8 folder?
Just trying to figure my thinking here!! LOL

Why waste time moving files around folders (and probably breaking existing backup)? Smart Collections....

Into a single 2''8 folder, sure. To create a new 2''8 hierarchy out of it, not so easy.
