Editing in photoshop

I know that you can select an image in LR and edit it in Photoshop.

But, what i'd like to know is, can you perform LR adjustments w/preset or whatever, select to edit it in photoshop with the adjustments on one layer and without on another layer if the same PS document.

Yes if you create the PS edit layers in PS on the edit Tiff or PSD. LR will only see the top flattened layer, tough and export that way when exporting later.

Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but Darjon, are you asking whether you can export to PS with a resulting file having a before layer and an after layer - before you've even started editing in PS?

For example, work on a colour image in LR and you apply a black and white preset, can you 'edit in PS' and get a colour image and the black and white version as an additional layer.

Is that what you're saying? I don't know of a way, other than doing 2 exports (one original, one with the preset) and layering them yourself. Might be an interesting feature request though.

What would you end up doing with them Darjon?

It's just, I'm thinking, a layered PSD file takes up a LOT of hard drive space. A single file in LR, with virtual copies or snapshots with each of the variations takes up only the preview space.

I could see some uses for it - sending to PS with all the images needed to merge into a panoramic, different exposure settings for HDR images, maybe even a spot color etc. What have you got in mind?

Pretty much what you said plus using masking to selectively reduce any presets applied with LR to get just the right blend. Or say you just apply some color corrections w/LR once in PS you have access to all your actions.

(I've seen an action or script that with one click, will allow you to target a folder of images, open one at a time, perform your edits, and with another click, save, close, and open the next image in the folder.)

As far as drive space, after the file is opened in photoshop and the retouched, I'd just flatten and save back as jpeg.

My workflow, after sorting and editing, I'd like a mechanism within LR to do this although your idea of virtual copies would to the trick, I wish there was a smother way.

sounds good to me.. I can see the sense in it. Also as some of those presets might take time to reproduce in Ps but need tweaking ( masking) in some way or another
