Edit in photoshop... show in history?

When I edit in photoshop I end up with a 2nd file in my library.

My first issue is - depending on the change - I cannot easily see a way to figure out which one is edited in photoshop and which isn't. Any way to tell?

Is there any way to avoid creating a 2nd file, and simply have the edit show up as a history step?

There's no way to avoid having a 2nd file created.

The edited file should have the -Edit in the file name. If you are in grid mode, you can change which information shows in the gray box around the photo's thumbnail with Ctrl-J

The 2nd file will have a PSD or TIFF extension. You can show that in the thumbnail via View menu > View Options or in the Metadata panel.

No you can't avoid the 2nd file once you've been to PS as you're doing pixel based editing in PS whereas LR is parametric editing (stored as text instructions).
