With a RAW image selected in LR I then click on Edit In : DxO Photolab 9 and the standard message box appears about leaving LR open etc whilst editing . Clicking continue the message box appears concerning Saving etc and PhotoLab opens but the image does not appear in DxO to allow an edit?

This may be an issue with PhotoLab. I have Topaz, and FastRAW Viewer as well as PhotoShop. The Edit-In function works as expected with them.

The Edit-In process is a System process where by an app is suspended while the system calls another app passing the full path file name as an argument in the command line. The called app then processes the file and returns control to the suspended app when it exits.

You might try adding PhotoLab again as an "Edit-In" target.
