Duplicates showing in library - what's causing them?

I use LR with iPhone camera for snapshots - some groups of photos are now showing as duplicates - here's details:

Lightroom desktop version 5.0 on Mac Pro (M1 silicon) and Lightroom mobile version 6.4.1 on iPhone SE (second). I take photos using the iPhone camera which are auto imported from camera roll into LR and then show in the LR library. If I browse back in time through my 2021 photos, they appear as expected, no duplicates - so far so good. But when I reach photos taken during March & April 2021, I find that there is a duplicate of each photo with identical file names (workflow was the same in March & April and I've not changed any hardware). Please can you help me understand why/how these are showing? Is it something to do with the new version of LR?
Thank you

Do you have an iPad or second iOS device? We usually see this where Photos sync is enabled in iOS preferences and they're being imported to LR on more than one device.

Thank you for replying and yes I do have other devices. In addition to iPhone SE and Mac I have an iPad and an old iPhone 6 all signed in to Lightroom . The iPad and old iPhone are mostly used for viewing/editing but occasionally I use the old phone camera and that is set to auto-upload.

That's probably it then, the same happened to me recently when I got a new device and forgot to turn off auto import. The trick is to only have LR's auto import enabled on one device, or turn off the Photos iCloud sync.
