I imported 6 raw images from disk that I new already were in the catalog (imported from another folder), and only one image was not imported because the system found its duplicate. All other 5 images were imported into a corresponding folder (different from where duplicates were). Windows Explorer confirms that these files are identical (name, date, size) - just different folders.

Hi Mike, welcome to the forum!

There's a checkbox in the Import dialog - 'do not import suspected duplicates' - if that's turned on, it will ignore any identical files (based on original filename, exif date, file length) regardless of which folder they're in.

If that checkbox is turned off, it'll let them be imported if they're in another folder, but if they're all in the same folder it'll skip them.

Duplicate images imported into the catalog

Victoria,

Thank you for the response, but I had this option checked, and Lightroom refused to import one file of six. However 5 other duplicates were imported. I wonder what is the basis for the Lightroom to discover a duplicate, since the date, size and name of allthese 6 files are the same.

There are 2 kinds of duplicates as I said before.

If files with the same name in the same folder are already in the catalog, they will never be imported as they're already there, regardless of your duplicates setting in the import dialog. That is likely what happened to the one file.

The second kind is influenced by the checkbox in the import dialog. That is based on filename (as it stands at the time of import) + exif date + file length.

Duplicate images in the Catalog

Victoria,

Thank you for your explanations. I found out that the Catalog somehow got corrupted, and it doesn't recognize duplicates of certain photos. I started another catalog and reported this bug to Adobe. Unfortunately, I can't recreate the situation that led to the corruption of the catalog.

Well done for narrowing it down.
