DNG thumbnails not recognized

I'm trying to learn how to use DNG format files in lieu of NEF files and have encountered an issue. In LR2, I selected a group of NEF images and then converted them to DNG using the "Convert to DNG.." command in the Library dropdown. I selected med sized previews. I did not embed original raw file.

When I look at my folder containing those images using Windows explorer, the DNG files show up, but there are no thumbnails shown. When I open other image viewers, they do not find any JPEG previews to show.

I also tried the Metadata "Update DNG preview...." function, but still the previews are not shown.

What am I doing wrong; what do I need to do for the DNG image previews to be seen?

I should add, that the DNG images show up fine in LR2.

Windows uses a codec to display thumbnails in Windows Explorer. JPGs, TIFF, BMP etc are documented standard formats and Microsoft has developed the Codecs for those. Proprietary RAW formats such as NEF and Public formats like DNG need to have the Codec developed by the mfg or a third party. Adobe has developed the DNG Codec for 32 bit Vista but no other platforms. There is a third party that has the codecs for most RAW formats including NEF and DNG You can D/L and install it here:
