.dng or .DNG

Going to LR help with a search for DNG a page comes up as "Convert photos to DNG". Going to this page under the File Extension you see: "Choose whether the file extension is .dng or .DNG." What is the difference here, and where do I go to set this?

Hi Guy,

Welcome. I do not have a copy of LR in front of me right now, so I am going to wing it and hope that somebody else will fill in what's missing. Caps or lowercase is mostly a user preference/style, and I believe that it can be set in the preferences for the LR catalog. I do not know if LR, and/or maybe the OS, might recognize caps differently from lowercase, but that may be a consideration as well. All in all, not a big issue unless you want the extension one way or the other. And if you do, it can be set accordingly. Personally, I like lowercase because it does not SHOUT at you.

With your help I did find the place to set dng or DNG. It's in the LR menu EDIT / PREFERENCES /IMPORT. Still wondering why an option is given?

I'd love to know the reasoning behind offering both upper and lower case, but I'd suggest sticking with lowercase as there can be compatibility issues with upper case extensions in some situations (other programs)

OS related Victoria.
On a UNIX system, you have to take care of upper/lower case or it won't give you what you asked for (For an URL as an example). On a Windows system, the case will be taken care of and be retained but it will not be fussy if you mismatch in a request so you will get it.
Also, did you noticed that in many FTP Transfer programs, there is an option to convert to lowercase? Useful when your website in on a LINUX server...

Guy approached me offline, and asked the same question, thinking perhaps it was too simple for the forum.

I welcomed him aboard, and since I knew the UC/LC option was available and was clueless as to why, I encouraged him to post.

Just a thought but as most RAW formats use an uppercase extension the user can opt to use an uppercase extension for DNG as well. Personally I convert all files to lowercase including the extension.

I sometimes use uppercase characters in filenames, but I always keep extensions lowercase. Force of habit, perhaps ...
