Hey all - happy friday!

So... I find myself frequently buckling under the wonderful weight of all the options we have in LR. That appears to have happened here...

I found a whole crop of photos I imported that are listed as being digital negatives (.dng) in my library. What did I do? Why are they not in their raw (.nef) format? Did I do something on import which caused this?

Do I lose any editability to these files because I've done this? Do you think it's worth reimporting them (again, not totally sure how I did this).

Thanks for helping me with my moronic issue. :-)

It seem that at import time, you choose "Copy photos as Digital Negatives (DNG) and add to catalog". The only editability you loose is in Nikon's own software. No problem with all other raw editors conforming to the DNG standard.

Reimporting may depend on how much time you already invested on working on the DNGs... Your choice. But if you never intend to use Nikon's software, just don't bother. If this is so, problably that you will want to keep this DNG method in the future as you raws will take much less storage space.

Denis -- brilliant! Thank you. I just test-imported a new file and saw that option. I never use the Nikon software so I think I'm good with the ones I've already brought in. Thank you for a great response!
